The super pollutant sprint: Local leadership, global results

We know super pollutants — methane, black carbon, and HFCs — are among the fastest levers to slow near-term warming, but the conversation has evolved. Awareness alone is not enough; it needs to lead to action. Governments and investors are responding to super pollutants' tangible economic, health, and security benefits, from improved air quality and public health outcomes to reduced regulatory exposure and new investment opportunities. As national leadership fluctuates, this session will showcase how subnational governments are turning pledges into measurable outcomes, moving from ambition to delivery. Jointly convened by Climate Group's the Subnational Methane Action Coalition (SMAC), an initiative coordinated by Climate Group in partnership with the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA), University of California, Berkeley, Center for Law, Energy, and the Environment (CLEE), with support from the Global Methane Hub, and the UNEP Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), this session brings together high-level leaders, national and subnational governments, philanthropic funders, and partners to explore what is already working, how delivery can be turned into public proof, and what it will take to connect local action to global momentum — culminating in a concrete call to action ahead of COP31.
