Climate Innovation Challenge: Project Finance with DeepSky and PwC

About this event

We’re excited to announce this year’s Climate Innovation Challenge, a two-day hackathon focused on financing one of Canada's first commercial-scale carbon dioxide removal (CDR) projects. Hosted by the Centre for Climate and Business Solutions at UBC Sauder, this challenge explores the unique complexities of first-of-a-kind (FOAK) project finance through Deep Sky One, Canada's first commercial-scale direct air capture (DAC) facility.

Guided by Greg Oberti (PwC Canada, Capital Projects & Infrastructure practice and Deals Utilities Leader) and Charlie Renzoni (Deep Sky, VP of Carbon Markets), participants will tackle real-world financing challenges, including:

- Structuring debt, equity, or hybrid financing for a FOAK climate infrastructure project - Designing bankable carbon removal off-take agreements - Navigating carbon markets and revenue certainty - Evaluating project risks and financing strategies for emerging climate technologies

This challenge is designed for graduate, DAP and upper year undergraduate students familiar with financial modelling, project feasibility, and financing structures. Ideal participants have prior corporate or project finance exposure and a strong interest in climate solutions.
