Indigenous and Local Knowledge for Amazon Biodiversity: Science, Territory, and Policy

About this event

In 2026, the Nature Positive Initiative is hosting a large pavilion at the UNCBD COP17 in Armenia.

Interweaving Indigenous, local and scientific knowledge to strengthen Amazon biodiversity conservation, territorial governance and implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF).

Convened by the Science Panel for the Amazon, this session brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous scientists, community representatives and potential partners to discuss knowledge systems for Amazon biodiversity conservation and territorial governance. Drawing on the 2025 Amazon Assessment Report and its Synthesis for Indigenous Peoples, Local Communities and Afrodescendant Peoples, it will explore equitable ways to interweave scientific, Indigenous, and local knowledge. Presentations and dialogue will highlight oral consultations, community feedback and multilingual communication held by the Panel, and identify pathways to support community agendas and translate knowledge into biodiversity policy and implementation of the KMGBF.
