Common Cause, Equity and Ties to a Place
About this event
Panel discussion connecting cultural identity and place for three equity seeking communities
Tying in with this year’s Why We Do Heritage: The Chinatown Bachelors and the Wongs’ Benevolent Association series of programming, this conversation focuses on the core theme of the hard and challenging work it takes a group of people to sustain the heritage that is important to them in their neighbourhoods.
The Wongs’ will host this conversation featuring three dedicated people working to keep the connections between the meanings of place and culture strong in the Hogan’s Alley, Paueru Gai (Powell Street) and Joyce-Collingwood areas of the city.
Guests will discuss struggles with systemic racism, exclusion from policies that affect them and their current cultural initiatives as ways of keeping their cultural identities strong and visible in the places important to them.
Together we will talk about current struggles, the different forms of community voice and inclusion, and what equity looks like for city policies on how land is used and the social and cultural planning of areas. We will also discuss shared goals and mutual support.
This event is a collaboration between the Wongs’ Benevolent Association and Heritage Vancouver Society. It is made possible in part by the financial support of the Department of Canadian Heritage.
