Changing Habits, Saving Food: Global Lessons in Behavior Change

About this event

Date: Monday, September 28, 2026Time: 10:00 – 11:00 am (GMT-4) / 16:00 – 17:00 (CEST)Location: online - Register hereAbout the EventFood waste prevention is one of the world’s most overlooked climate opportunities. More than one billion tonnes of food are wasted each year globally. Combined with food loss earlier in the supply chain, this generates an estimated 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions and contributes significantly to methane emissions, much of which comes from landfills. Preventing food waste is therefore a fast and cost-effective way to reduce methane emissions, while strengthening food security, improving resource efficiency and advancing a circular, zero-waste economy.Momentum for action is growing. Building on the International Day of Zero Waste and the Zero Waste Forum held earlier this year, and in response to the United Nations Secretary-General’s Call to Action on Methane, governments, cities, businesses and financial institutions are being called upon to accelerate action across the major methane-emitting sectors. Reducing food loss and waste and developing low-methane waste systems are central to this effort.Organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and WRAP, this event will explore how growing momentum can translate into lasting action to prevent food waste. Drawing on practical examples from around the world, including the upcoming U.S. national campaign and global initiatives such as the Food Waste Breakthrough, speakers will share what works, the challenges that remain, and how successful approaches can be adapted and scaled. The discussion will also examine effective behaviour change interventions, national campaigns, and the role of engaging the next generation in driving sustained action. Participants will leave with practical ideas and transferable strategies to strengthen food waste prevention efforts and build momentum towards the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste and Food Waste Prevention Week.If you have any questions or would like more information about the event, please contact oscar.ivanova@un.org.
